Mauna Loa’s unpredictable lava flow creeps within 2 miles of critical highway

The relentless eruption of the world’s largest active volcano has prompted Hawaii’s National Guard to step in as residents and tourists flock to see it.

For 10 days, Mauna Loa has been shooting jets of lava toward the sky and down the massive mountain. While officials say there’s still no immediate risk to communities on Hawaii’s Big Island, lava has now crept closer to Daniel K. Inouye highway – the main highway connecting the eastern and western halves of the Big Island. “Lava has approached within 1.75 miles of Old Saddle Road and within about 1.92 miles of the Daniel K. Inouye Highway,” said Mike Zoeller of the US Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. The lava was advancing about 21 to 22 yards per hour, Zoeller said Tuesday.

After opening the choice of Word of the Year up to English speakers for the first time in its history, over the last two weeks more than 300,000 people cast their vote. The Oxford Word of the Year is a word or expression reflecting the ethos, mood, preoccupations of the past twelve months, one that has potential as a term of lasting cultural significance. Supported by evidence of real language usage, Oxford’s editors track candidates as they emerge throughout the year, analyzing frequency statistics and other language data in the Oxford English Corpus. Previous words have included vax (2021), climate emergency (2019), and selfie (2013).

And the winner is Goblin mode.‘Goblin mode’, a slang term, often used in the expressions ‘in goblin mode’ or ‘to go goblin mode’ – is ‘a type of behavior which is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations.’

The dark and light in this piece really works. I like to think of the light as positive and that there will be an end to the darkness in the Ukraine.

Although the pictures of Mauna Loa are fantastic I liked the pic of the Black-winged Stilt even more. It's too cute with these long legs.
