I didn't know what I would do for today's blog, but I saw this and thought, there is a little story. When I was five, my parents sent me to San Francisco, alone, to stay with my Grandma. It was my first flight. This was done back then, as it was a short one hour flight and the stewardesses were able to look out for me. A complication was that I brought a kitten with me in a box. A further complication to that was that it got out during the flight and I remember it as not a popular event. My Grandma and her husband met me at the airport, but they didn't know they were getting two visitors. TMI?
So what was your first flight? and to where?

OK, this piece is just the best. I have so many favorites of your work but this one rates near the top, Love it!
It was not my first flight but when I was about 12 a friend, Becky, was visiting my family. She lived near Seattle and we lived in Maryland. She stayed with us for about three weeks. It was time for her to return home but there was an airline strike. Only American Airlines was flying coast to coast. I do not know why my parents agreed to this but we both secured tickets to Los Angles from Washington, D. C.and off we flew trying to get to Seattle.
The plan was to then buy a ticket on Western Airlines to Seattle from L.A. Well guess what? We had to wait our turn and we ended up staying in the LA airport for 30 hours. Our entertainment was going around the airport looking for money in pay phones. We found about $30.00 in change during this layover. We finally got on a flight to Seattle. What an adventure! I do not think most parents would allow their preteen to do this in today’s world.
Thanks, John for sharing your memories, I had hoped someone would and glad it was you. Have a great day.
Great collage!! I sure like all the colors!
My first time to fly was when I flew home from Houston, TX. One of my brothers lived in Bay City and asked me to spend 2 wks. visiting. He was home visiting and I rode back with he and 2 friends of his. I was afraid to fly but didn't tell anyone (I was 21!). The stewardesses were so nice to me and kept stopping to visit with me - aisle seat - maybe they could tell (Ha!). A gentleman sitting next to me
asked if I was a stewardess, since they kept talking to me. That made me laugh! He was a Kikkoman salesman and gave me a cool pen and soy sauce samples. I was so happy to land in Phoenix when I did but realized that it wasn't so bad after all!
What an adventure John, oh my goodness! I sure enjoyed your story!
Jacki, good Lord, what wonderful story! Flying alone at 5 must have been scarey but you took a friend along which must have made it easier! I am sure people talked about the little girl that brought her kitten along for a very long time. Such a fun story! What a great idea this is. Such much for writing less.
Elenor, I enjoyed your VW story about your trip to Amsterdam.
What a lovely story about your first flight. Only five years old and flying alone, how brave you were! How clever you brought your kitten with you and nobody noticed - this only was possible in the good old times. And how nice to read about John‘s and Carol‘s first flights. Want to hear my story? I already was (sweet) 16 and was going to England for an English holiday class. My seat was in the back next to a young man. He was a year older than me and looked so good! After he had offered me a jewing gum we started to talk and you probably already guess we fell in love.
So each of us 4 has dear memories of our first flight and we could share them. That makes me really happy!
Thanks Jacki for your lovely blog and giving us the opportunity to connect. And of course thanks to John and Carol too.
