The City of Los Angeles Has Voted to Designate Artist Nun Corita Kent’s Studio a Landmark, Saving It From Becoming a Parking Lot.
Kent worked in the building from 1960 to 1968. |
The city of Los Angeles has voted to save the former studio of Corita Kent, the artist, educator, and former Catholic nun who turned Pop art into a tool for activism.
The nondescript Hollywood building at 5518 Franklin Avenue where Kent worked from 1960 to 1968 had been slated for demolition, but has now been designated a historic landmark in an unanimous vote by the Los Angeles City Council.
In honor of Corita’s legacy, we are exploring how the future of this building can be shaped in service of Los Angeles’ creative community. There are many conversations to be had, but we know that you all will be right there with us.

First...big hello Jackie! Secondly, really like your "Hildy" - and thanks for the update on Sister Corita Kent's art legacy. When Tom was in the Seminary in the 60's, she gave Tom three of her works, which we still have. Quite an honor. When I was in grammar school, I attended Immaculate Conception Elementary school from 1st grad to 8th grade. The Sisters of the Immaculate Heart taught there. Looking at your photos this morning brought back so many memories of their presence in my life at that time. Thanks for your post this morning...very informative for me!
Making an art center instead of a parking lot, that's great. We really should stop to sacrifice so much for cars. People are much more important. Thanks for sharing the photos of Corita Kent and some of her work.
I also like Hildy
Thanks, Jacki for your explanations in your answer to my comment. I only hope I don't insult you or anybody else you with my poor English.
Thanks Elenor, and as I have said before, your English is better than most of us! So insulting is not a possibility. I am glad you liked Corita, she is mt favorite artist, still since, high school. Thanks again!
Great choice of background color. I so look forward to seeing what you come up with to share each day. :-)
