Earthquakes

An earthquake – also called a quake, tremor, or temblor – is the shaking of the surface of Earth resulting from a sudden release of energy in the lithosphere that creates seismic waves. Earthquakes can range in intensity, from those that are so weak that they cannot be felt, to those violent enough to propel objects and people into the air, damage critical infrastructure, and wreak destruction across entire cities. The seismic activity of an area is the frequency, type, and size of earthquakes experienced over a particular time. The seismicity at a particular location in the Earth is the average rate of seismic energy release per unit volume. The word tremor is also used for non-earthquake seismic rumbling.

At the Earth's surface, earthquakes manifest themselves by shaking and displacing or disrupting the ground. When the epicenter of a large earthquake is located offshore, the seabed may be displaced sufficiently to cause a tsunami. Earthquakes can also trigger landslides.

Magnitude 4.1 quake rattles So California on New Year's Day

The temblor, which struck at 8:27 a.m. local time, was centered in the Pacific Ocean 12 miles south of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., and 16 miles southwest of downtown Long Beach at a depth of just over 7 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damages.

The quake came on the same day as a major, 7.5-magnitude quake in Japan triggered tsunami warnings, but are unrelated, a noted seismologist said. Lucy Jones, founder of the Dr. Lucy Jones Center for Science & Society, wrote on X. "Not near any known fault. Way too small to even talk about tsunamis. Japan's M7.5 is 100,000 times bigger than a M4."

Earthquakes

Having lived in California 76/82 years, I am used to the possibility but I really don't spend much time thinking about it. Earthquakes are like the boogey man, you never see him, but there is the chance that he may attack, but you don't know where, when or for how long?  I do remember having drills in school 100 years ago, I think we got under our desks? Now many are prepared with earthquake survival kits ...

Many are ready, most of us are not.

Happy New Year Jacki. Your collage really conveys and earthquake feeling. I was driving on my way to cook Oshogatsu with my friend so did not feel anything but Bob was at home and did feel it. I like the poem you selected today. xo

Your collage really gives me the feeling of an earthquake happening. In the middle of the 1970ies I experienced a heavy earthquake. It was so creepy and I was most surprised it happened silently.

I had to laugh. You brought back a memory with this piece. Remember the show Zorro. There was the slash with the sword creating the Z. :-)
