  • Spotlight on artist Yoko Tada.

“natsu no prelude” (prelude of the summer) by Yoko Tada won honorable mention last year from the Japan Watercolor Association

Last year her work was recognized by the Japan Watercolor Association and this year she is publishing her first book of paintings. But her path to artistry has been anything but straight. She is turning 100 this year, and after over a 60-year gap, rekindled her love for painting in her 80s.

While attending college at current-day Fukuoka Women’s University, the Pacific War broke out. Tada joined the Women’s Volunteer Corps. She married at 21 but her husband was sent off to war 2 months later and for the next 40 years Tada devoted herself to her home: raising a family, doing chores and maintaining family relationships. “There wasn’t much time for anything else,” she recalls. It wasn’t until she was in her 60s when she finally began to have more time for herself. Tada began going to museums and exhibitions where she slowly rediscovered her passion for art. Later on, in her 80s, Tada met a teacher who would go on to mentor her and she began to paint more seriously. When  the opportunity to publish a collection of works, Tada admits that her age does make it difficult to paint sometimes, but says that when she is painting she feels like a child.

Day 5, Sunday in Nevada

I woke early, and went out to the backyard to read. It is so quiet and lovely, I have read half of my 400+ page book, while in Nevada.

I took my shower at 9 AM and I left for church at 10 AM, riding with Superman. WonderWoman had gone at 8 AM to help with both services. I took photos from inside the super-car.

Then at church, Eastside-Las Vegas, Superman had to check in for security detail, and WonderWoman helped with welcoming. Grandhunks 1& 3 and lovely Raquel sat with me. The music and sermon were great. There were baptisms after both services. After the second service there were six to be baptized. A father and son, newlyweds, a lady, an 87 year old man who was veteran in a wheelchair. The pastor said he wasn't sure how they would work it out, since they baptize by full immersion. When the time came, 6'6" GH#1 carried the sweet man into the baptismal pool and helped the pastor baptize him. An amazing sight.

The gentleman was so happy and was crying as he expressed his thanks to all.

Next, 8 of us went for lunch at ...
