Intimate Animal Portraits Capture Unique  Personalities of Cats, Dogs, and Horses

Photographer Robert Bahou has always wanted pierce through the cuteness and capture what's really going on in an animal's mind. “The idea for this project has been to capture close and telling portraits of the animals we are most familiar with, in an attempt to cast a fresh but honest gaze their way,” the photographer tells us in an email. “I've avoided all distraction by limiting the photographs to medium shots with a black background, and I have purposely avoided humor as a selling point. Despite all the cameras we point at cats and dogs (and sometimes horses), we rarely attempt to capture an intimate moment of character, or personality. We generally direct our attention towards actions, behavior, and so forth.”

This fascination with animals on a deeper level was what led Bahou to create Animal Soul, a series devoted to capturing the many quirks and personalities of dogs, cats, and horses, visually.

“I want people to look at animals in a way that they don't normally do. I want to show the animals they're so familiar with in a way they haven't seen them before,” states the photographer.

“By looking at my own photos, I often end up seeing them in a different way.” With his expressive models before him, Bahou knew he wanted to transform his love for animals into a coffee table book, and we're happy to say that he has just recently fully funded his dream.

A very short story.

While walking I passed the chalk drawing below.

It registered in my fuzzy brain, and I went home to get my phone. With no artist nearby to claim it, I could imagine tiny hands having fun exploring on a big willing canvas.

The extra effort put into fitting this heart into the corner. Genius. Then I got an e-mail with cousin Julia's work.

I can picture her pretty face as she created this joyful guy. Art for art's sake. When it just has to come out. The purest of art, not for money, likes, clicks, or numbers.

Bravo!

So much emotion in this piece. Sadness as the eyes seem to represent that emotion. Really powerful piece, Jacki. :-)

Thank you, John. It seemed the more I worked the sadder it became. I had watched and cried watching 60 minutes onthe Ukraine.

Jacki, this again is one of those blogs in which I love each word! From the start to the end.
Your last smile is just so wonderful. Why are we so often focusing on the terrible things that happen? Only bad news are good news it seems - how silly are we to forget all the great things in front of us? Jacki, you show us every day that there is so much positive happening. Thanks for that.

Thanks so much for your kind words, Elenor.
I will keep trying.
