Day 3445: Franz.

"Franz": old photo, junk mail collage & digital.

At 40, Franz Kafka (1883-1924), who never married and had no children, walked through the park in Berlin when he met a girl who was crying because she had lost her favorite doll. She and Kafka searched for the doll unsuccessfully.

Kafka told her to meet him there the next day and they would come back to look for her. The next day, when they had not yet found the doll, Kafka gave the girl a letter "written" by the doll saying "please don't cry. I took a trip to see the world. I will write to you about my adventures."

Thus began a story which continued until the end of Kafka's life. During their meetings, Kafka read the letters of the doll carefully written with adventures and conversations that the girl found adorable.

Finally, Kafka brought back the doll (he bought one) that had returned to Berlin."It doesn't look like my doll at all," said the girl. Kafka handed her another letter in which the doll wrote: "my travels have changed me." the little girl hugged the new doll and brought her happy home.

A year later Kafka died. Many years later, the now-adult girl found a letter inside the doll. In the tiny letter signed by Kafka it was written: "Everything you love will probably be lost, but in the end, love will return in another way."

2GN2S ...

Patrick the Giver

Speaking of people making a difference, introducing you to a man who's been delivering thousands of meals to frontline workers throughout the pandemic. Patrick J. Rhodes created the Lunch for Healthcare Heroes campaign in April 2020, and personally paid for and delivered more than 600 pizzas and sandwiches to hospitals in the Tampa, Florida area. Then, things started to really catch on: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson took notice and donated 200 meals, and in 2021, Rhodes partnered with the Inspire Foundation to smash his goal of delivering 2,021 more free meals to community heroes. He's even expanded his operation to include free school supplies for teachers. His philosophy is simple: "I strongly believe that small acts of kindness will change the world."

How does he plan to top it all in 2022? More free meals, of course, and a call to action: "My goal for 2022 is to create a #KindnessTakeover environment that uplifts and inspires," Rhodes says on Twitter.

Hi Jacki,

Thank you for the sweet stories. Why are those never in the newspapers? I enjoyed listening to the accents of the rabbit owners as much as watching the rabbits. When I was a girl, we had a pet rabbit. His name was Mr. McGregor. In the summer he was all white, but in our winter his ears turned a beautiful dark brown. Supposedly that was because the country where he was a native their winters and summers were reversed from ours. Another fun fact: he loved eating pumpkin pie and would sit on my lap and watch TV. (We also had a chicken, Lambert, and a duck, Herbert. It was like a little mini farm because that was where my mom grew up. She had a vegetable garden behind the garage, and we got eggs from Lambert several times a week: fun memories.

Such a cute story about Franz Kafka. I wouldn't say he is very popular here because his work is hard to understand but he is a much valued and important author writing in German. He was a serious, gifted but unhappy person. I like that your story shows him as a very kind and sensitive person.
You again found such a touching 2GN2S story. It's important to speak about these good people who really make a difference.
