Mountain Villa in Yamanashi Integrates Landscape and Living Room
photos by Daici Ano courtesy Keiji Ashizawa Architects |
This house in Saiko is a holiday home that overlooks Mount Fuji on the shore of Lake Saiko, one of the five Fuji Lakes. Designed by architect Keiji Ashizawa, and completed in 2017, the house integrates landscape and living room through stepping stones that lead from the outside into the inside where a large camphor-wood tabletop evokes the majestic cliffs and beautiful forests that surround the home.
The home is quite simple and so were the requirements from the client: one bedroom, one large bathroom and a living room where everyone could relax. Ultimately, the home was inspired by rock faces and Japanese red pine trees growing on the cliffs that stand near the site.
A single piece of camphor wood, owned by the client, was installed in the center of the living room. Bathrooms and a terrace, located on the south side of the property, are both liberating spaces. On the opposite side is a tatami loft, a perfectly flexible space for relaxing or allowing kids to play.

wow! Jacki,
There was enough in this blog or three blogs. I, of course, loved the home that celebrated nature. The eye was really quite creative. I liked it better than the sports ball. Also I had seen the beautiful video on the wolves. But it was worth watching again. Thank you.
Besides the Japanese house the smile about the 2 choices one has every morning was my favorite. Mornings are not my best time of a day - I feel much better in the evening. I have to motivate myself to feel brave enough for the new day with all possibilities and this smile helps me not to forget this. I want to chase my dreams as long as possible. Thanks for this inspiration, Jacki.
Thanks Carrol,
Thank you for your kind words. I always think of you when I include architecture.
Thanks Elenor! I am not a great morning person, I am so slow!! ;o)
Great blog! I think the eyeball is so cool!!wish I could see it in person.
I love the wolves video. Amazing…
So much to enjoy in this posting. Love the piece…..for some reason it takes me on a vacation. The sphere in Vegas is amazing. :-)
Thanks John, my subject seems to vary with where I am that day?
