Van Gogh Painting Gets a New Name Thanks to an Eagle-Eyed Chef
Vincent van Gogh's recently renamed still life Red Cabbages and Garlic (1887) |
When Ernst de Witte visited the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam last year, he wasn’t expecting to leave his mark on art history. De Witte, a chef and visual artist, was admiring work by the famed Dutch artist when his culinary expertise signaled something was amiss: Red Cabbages and Onions, an 1887 still life, had been incorrectly titled.
In the foreground of the painting, De Witte saw two heads of garlic, not
onions. Confident in his identification thanks to his experience in the
kitchen—he is currently the head chef of Restaurant Feu in Utrecht, Netherlands—he sent a message to the museum, which “took it seriously from the start,” he tells Hyperallergic’s Rhea Nayyar.
The museum then handed over the information to its research team, which concluded, with the help of a biologist, that de Witte was right: The painting’s ingredients had been misidentified since its public debut in 1928.
In November, the museum told de Witte it was changing the name of the painting, which is now listed as Red Cabbages and Garlic.
To celebrate his discovery, de Witte created a dish inspired by the painting, featuring poached red cabbage and a smoked garlic creme with a vinaigrette of lemon balm, tarragon and absinthe.

Glad to see "Hope". It's so colorful and pleasing. I think maybe the beautiful flowers gave you a lift and some hope for our world in general.
I have always been unable to identify myself as either left brain or right brain, because I can see aspects of both in my thinking, behavior, etc. So I was glad to view the interesting video regarding that.
Have a lovely day tomorrow. Think how blessed we are to be mothers, and also those women who care for children and/or other people, but are not biological mothers: this is their special day also.
Carrol Wolf is so right saying we are blessed to be mothers. I only would add: AND grandmothers. What better could happen to us. I don't know anything.
Happy Mothers Day, Jacki!
Thanks Carrol, I love hearing from you. Yes flowers are inspiring and I thought we needed some hope.
Have a fabulous Mother's Day tomorrow, although I think you get the best out Mothers and Grandmothers Day, everyday. You have a remarkable ability to do so many things expertly, and with humor and grace. I love you Carol.
Thank you, Elenor. Yes we are blessed indeed. It's difficult to focus on our gratitude when you hear the news? But we must. Happy Mother's Day, Elenor.
I love minimalism. Hard to achieve and you did it! :-)
Thanks again, John!
