Rotating 42-Layer Sculpture

of Franz Kafka’s Head by David Cerny

Located in a busy shopping center in Prague, this twisting and reflective sculpture depicting the head of writer Franz Kafka is the latest kinetic artwork by controversial Czech artist David Cerny. Installed in 2014, the enormous mirrored bust is comprised of 42 independently driven layers of stainless steel and weighs in at some 45 tons. The piece brilliantly reveals Kafka’s tortured personality and unrelenting self doubt that plagued him his entire life. The layering of objects is a common motif for Cerny who built a similar rotating head that also functions as a fountain titled Metalmorphosis.

      Threatened: A Green-Haired Turtle

This Australian turtle is making headlines around the world, the weird-looking star
on a new list of threatened reptiles issued by the Zoological Society of London.

This one with the green “mohawk” hair (actually algae), formally known as the Mary River turtle, is an Australian species that split from other living species about 40 million years ago. It has special organs in its cloaca that allow it to draw oxygen from the water. It can stay underwater for up to three days.

What a lovely Throwback Thursday photo, Jacki!
I'm glad my postcard arrived. It took longer than a month and I wasn't sure if it got lost. Yes, Milano is a fascinating city and the best thing was I met my son who works there every day. These were happy days.
