Nine Massive Waves of Deadwood Surge Across Forest Floor, Hamburg

As the fear of a second wave of COVID-19 swept through Germany in the fall of 2020, photographer and artist Jörg Gläscher decided to channel his own worry into a project that felt similarly vast and domineering. “I was working (with the idea of) the pure power of nature, the all-destroying force, which brings one of the richest countries in the world to a completely still stand,” he tells Colossal. “A wave is a periodic oscillation or a unique disturbance the state of a system.”

Jörg Gläscher decided to channel his own worry into a project that felt similarly vast and domineering. “I was working (with the idea of) the pure power of nature, the all-destroying force, which brings one of the richest countries in the world to a completely still stand,” he tells Colossal. “A wave is a periodic oscillation or a unique disturbance the state of a system.”

Between November 2020 and March 2021, Gläscher spent his days in a secluded location near Hamburg, where he gathered deadwood and constructed nine massive crests—the largest of which spans four meters high and nine meters wide—that overwhelm the forest floor in undulating layers of branches and twigs. Each iteration, which he photographed and then promptly destroyed in order to reuse the materials, overwhelms the existing landscape with pools of the formerly thriving matter.

Gläscher’s installations are part of a larger diaristic project he began at the beginning of the pandemic. Since then, he published a few magazines to present the works that range from photography to sculpture in one place, which you purchase along with prints in his shop. Find more of his multi-media projects on his site and Instagram. (via This Isn’t Happiness)

Alaskan Wood Frog ... cool character?

These diurnal animals emit a piercing shriek to startle a predator, forcing it to release the captured frog. While their territories measure around 900 square feet, they come back to their breeding sites every year. They are mostly solitary, congregating at breeding sites. Wood frogs exhibit significant kin recognition capabilities, with tadpoles being able to identify their parents with the use of paternal and maternal factors.

Amazingly, during winter they freeze themselves, keeping themselves warm by stopping their heartbeats and producing an antifreeze substance that prevents the ice from getting frozen within the cells. Once the temperature rises, they thaw and come back to life.

Dear Jacki,

How you do it everyday is a pure mystery to me. I loved the last quote, and the frog who can freeze and then come back, is an amazing feat of nature. (Of course I have felt they were trying to freeze me in some grocery stores. But it didn't work, as I go out of there!)

And all of your grandsons are "keepers". I would say you are lucky, but I am certain that they care for you, like they do because of how you care for them. Thank you for a great start to my day.

I love the photos of you and Jake and of the 2004 Kangieko! Both say so much about you. Love the quote too. Thanks for always being here Jacki. I have seen first hand how much you care and tend to your blog and it is much appreciated. xo Irene

Thanks so much Carrol, you are so ki9nd and make me feel like I am doing something GOOD because starting your day w2ell is so worthwhile. I get some help for being rather prolific in past years more than now) but I CAN TAKE AN OLDER PEICE AND REDO IT. EXCUSE the caps, they were unintentional but I guess appropriate. And I don't do all the other things you get done in a day, you are amazing.
