Fumiya Watanabe’s Delicate Sculptures

“My work is like a diary, like a poem,” says Fumiya Watanabe, who translates daily experiences and emotions into poignant wooden sculptures. Based in Gifu, Japan, the artist studied wood carving during university, then later with a master Inami artisan. Honing a technical understanding of the medium prompted Watanabe to immortalize things he saw and experienced into delicate artworks.

The artist spends time doodling in his free time, cataloguing things he has seen. “My feelings appear in various forms,” he tells Colossal.

“Events in my daily life, things from the past, people around me, and the dogs and cats I live with also come to me…. I am not trying to convey some big message in my works. I just give form to what I feel. I want the viewer to freely interpret and enjoy them.”

Watanabe’s work will be on view in a solo exhibition in Tokyo at msb gallery from June 13 to 23. More on the artist’s website, and follow updates on Instagram.

Howdy from Arizona!, No, not Nevada, Arizona!

Grandhunk #2, Jake (now 25,  a college grad with honors and working man), drove us to Lake Havasu today to celebrate his birthday (yesterday) and also Father's Day with the family.

A tradition since they were all younger. This is my first time to go, as I always willingly stayed home with the dogs.

Now there is only, Zoey, and she loves to be at Havasu. The family has a house that they rent out sometimes, WW is very picky. There will be 9 of us, but the house sleeps 13, so plenty of room. They keep their boat there, year-round, so Saturday and Sunday will be on the River, pictures should be forth coming.

After evening meal at La Vita Dolce, Lake Havasu.

Yes, I am with family as I write to you. In Havasu is one of hottest places, in Arizona. It was 113 today and we were out on the river. Have you ever been in that kind of heat?

Hello Jacki! So delighted to see you enjoying time with your family and on a boat no less! How fantastic is that! Wonderful tribute to family love! Great pic of you and your father! As of the book "I Am an Artist," I regard this as a fantastic tool to inspire the young ones to check out the world of art! I have found thru the years, with the help of teachers like you, and others, our Paul, that diving into the arts whether thru music, painting, or many other artistic venues moves the mind, heart and spirit into a world of peace, joy, relaxation and more. One does not have to be a five star artist, but as you told us so many times.....just have fun doing it! You might surprise yourself...I know I have!! Love and Hug! (love your classy hat on that boat!
