Penguins with newly perfect vision
It sounds like a set-up to a joke: What do
you call a penguin who needs eyeglasses? We may never know, because
these three elderly king penguins in Singapore don’t need spectacles –
they’ve been fitted with custom-made lenses to restore their eyesight after vets removed their cataracts. It’s likely the first time such a procedure has been performed on king penguins.
The king penguins, all over 20 years old,
at Singapore’s Jurong Bird Park underwent cataract surgery after their
keepers noticed their eyes looked cloudy and the birds had trouble
seeing. To improve their vision, veterinary ophthalmologists created
special “intraocular lens implants” for each penguin (flippers make
taking out contacts impossible, probably). After a recovery period in
which the penguins were on strict protocol to avoid their usual dips in
the pool, the vets noticed the gang grew more responsive and active
after receiving their new lenses. Now they have bragging rights among
the bird park’s sizable penguin population that they made history.

WonderWoman had already walked Zoey 3 miles, gone to workout and had left a note that she had gone a quick Costco run. By the time she was home, I was ready for the day. We went to the Hemingway park overlooking Lake Mead. It is known for the long horned sheep that come down from the adjacent mountains to graze on the lush green lawn. This was my second trip but I have missed them. WW has gone more and had seen them. Since we missed them, WW said we would try again another day and we took off for the town of Summerlin.

I’ve seen those sheep. They walk right next to you. They know they are protected. Amazing feeling.
Just getting out and walking is a great start. Didnt know about Lake Mead sheep. I stopped for a herd crossing Hwy111 in Palm springs once. They have the right of way of course..
How was the water level at the lake?
Thanks Anonymous, we went again today, mid morning which Google said is the best time to see them, but no luck so far.
Ho Bea, good to hear from you. Lake Mead is down a lot. You can really see the difference from the plane. We drove by there this morning and the waters was a beautiful blue-green. It is so beautiful with all the gorgeous scenery.
Jacki, I'm so glad you can spend a fine time with your daughter.
Can you imagine we here in Austria have problems with water? We always thought we had much more water than we ever needed. This winter was much warmer than usual with less rainfall and nearly no snow that could melt later. So the water level in several lakes is dramatically low, some already dried out. Fields are much too dry, and farmers are very concerned about it. Global warming has reached us here in Austria.

Thanks Elenor. I am sorry to hear about your water shortage, I am afraid GLOBAL Warming is a reality for us all. We have had so much rain, but we are still short. I am having a good time here.
When I first looked at this latest piece. I thought, “Is there a sheriff in town/“ might be the name of it. Love the boldness of the star shape in this one. :-)
