2GN2S ...

About the Girl with a Pearl Earring

People travel to The Hague from all over the world to see Johannes Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring in the flesh.

Vermeer painted the girl without any hard lines. We call this technique sfumato, the Italian word for smoky or blurred. This means that all kinds of details are missing, such as the hook for the earring – Vermeer did not paint that at all. And where does her nose turn into her cheek? So you can see more than Vermeer actually painted: your brain fills in the details so subtly that you don’t even notice it happening. But this also means that everyone sees something different, we each have our own Girl.

We don’t know who posed for Girl with a Pearl Earring. But we do know quite a lot about the painting itself. This is because we have conducted extensive research into the painting in recent years, using the very latest techniques to do so. We found answers to questions about how Vermeer painted the Girl.Which pigments did he use and where did they come from? Did Vermeer make a sketch before he started painting? And is there anything to say about that dark background?

The research was conducted by a team of internal and external experts, and was led by one of the Mauritshuis conservators: Abbie Vandivere. Let her tell you all about the research into the Girl. Feeling inspired to get to know the painting better and zoom in on all kinds of details? This Open Call triggered an explosion of creativity. No fewer than 3,482 Girls from all over the world found their way to The Hague. Painted, drawn, in wool, clay, wood, fabric, flower petals, buttons, ceramics, vegetables, fruit, shells, glass beads, balloons, Lego or as tattoos A selection of 170 submitted works will be digitally displayed in a loop at the place where the real Girl always hangs.

While the world famous painting by Vermeer, Girl With A Pearl Earring is on loan to the Rijksmuseum, the Mauritshuis museum (the painting’s home) has a special replacement, a digital installation featuring 170 submissions from an open call. Called My Girl With A Pearl, it’s creative and fun. Scroll to see a bunch💛.

Grief and Laughter

I went to another Celebration of Life for a good friend of over 20 years. He was a fellow black-belt, a Husband, Dad and Grandfather. A college athlete, Viet Nam veteran, lawyer, friend to many, with a heart of gold. Jim was born a twin in Abilene, Texas. Though he's lived in SoCal half of his life he still had that great Texas accent.

Just a really good guy, who you would love if you were lucky enough to meet him. The family service was held at 10 am in El Toro, then at noon a large crowd (160+) came for the Celebration of Jim at Harborside Grand Ballroom overlooking Newport Harbor. A wonderful buffet got us ready for the program. Jim's son and daughter both spoke of Jim's wonderful gentleness and his undying support. His daughter in law, spoke of him as so welcoming and kind. Several friends and colleagues spoke bringing both tears and many laughs.

I have lost three close friends in the past year, I will miss Jim's humor and great personality. They spoke of his great storytelling, I never heard a story, I wish I had.
Goodbye dear friend.

My love and prayers for Nancy, Justin, Amy, Lauren and family.

Isn’t it interesting how one uses color and how the accompanying colors service that color. Yellow is predominant. Would it be if the other colors were missing in action? Sorry for the loss of your friend. You could tell he was a kind person from his photo. :-)

Can you believe I was so lucky to see Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring some years ago in The Hague? I could look at the girl for hours.
It is such a good idea to also show so many different interpretation of the girl. She is such an inspiration to so many people nowadays. Vermeer would have loved to see this.
Have a happy weekend, Jacki!
