The Japanese Bush Warbler

The Japanese Bush or Plum Warbler, or uguisu, has such a lovely call that it's bird call (hohokekyo) has become commonplace in Japan. The Warbler's call is known to signal the arrival of Spring and begins in mid-February in Southern Japan but won't be heard in the North until the end of April.

"Plum Warbler" (1940) by Koitsu Tsuchiya

The woodblock prints of Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870 - 1949) are notable for their dramatic use of light and shadow. He didn't become successful until around the 1930s when a chance encounter with the shin-hanga movement led Tsuchiya to begin producing landscape prints in the shin-hanga style. He went on to design various prints for publishers in Tokyo

During WWII, Jews in Budapest were brought to the edge of the Danube, ordered to remove their shoes, and shot, falling into the water below.

60 pairs of iron shoes now line the river's bank, a ghostly memorial to the victims. 'Shoes on the Danube Promenade' by Can Togay and Gyula Pauer.

 * I got to see the shoes personally on a trip as a coach with the USA Jr. Team competing at World Karate Jr.Championship in Budapest, 1990. We took the kids on an evening tour, since we had no free daytime. I can still remember the eerie feeling standing there with the shoes by the Danube by moonlight.

Zelinsky is synonymous with the word strength. Your piece is an emphasis of his strength. :-)

On our trip to Budapest we too came by these shoes. It's a picture I'll never forget. I tried to imagine what these poor people were feeling standing there. There are no words....
Thanks for sharing this, Jacki!

Thanks, John, yes it's good they have a strong younger man leading, as it must take so much energy.

Thanks, Elenor. Yes, I agree. I will never forget the shoes in the moonlight with a reflection on the Danube. The stroller have that same heartache?
