Something Wicked This Way Paddles

Chatfield State Park in Colorado is one of dozens of places where witches take flight each fall, at least, on their paddle boards.

Every October, hundreds of revelers in witch costumes float on lakes and bays, ponds and harbors. Instead of brooms, they opt for paddle boards.

The South Bay Witches Paddle in Redondo Beach, Calif., in 2020. The events take place across the United States.

“Four hundred people dressed as witches launching at the same time is wild to see,” said Anna Marie Madai, a co-founder of a witch paddle in Littleton, Colo.

Participants are encouraged to go all out when it comes to dressing up, like they did in 2022 in Medford Lakes, N.J.

A paddler in Colorado. “Being called a witch, in general, is something that can be taken so negatively,” Anna Marie Madai said, but to her, it signifies “embracing your own inner power and inner strength.”

Some paddlers will learn how to paddle-board just for the occasion. A few inevitably end up in the water, Ms. Ausseresses said, but it’s all in good fun. “It’s amazing when you do something for fun and it spreads,” she said

It breaks my heart, but fire destroyed a historic World War II-era hangar early Tuesday at the former Tustin Air Base that was a significant part of Orange County's military history.

I can remember seeing the Tustin Blimp Hangars as a little girl.

We didn't live in Tustin back then,
but we must have driven by?
I now live near the hangars and see them regularly when I go to Costco.
They are like dinosaurs from the past.
It's hard to relay the size, but they say seventeen stories high. So huge inside that they have their own weather system.
September 2011, I read that the North Hangar would be open to the public on that Saturday morning. I rushed over and took 311 photos.
One of the largest all wood US structures.

Taken mid-way, see a 50 second video.

I spent four hours in and around the hangar that day. When we left, a car commercial was to be shot there.

Now we have only the South Hangar. The three-alarm fire was reported around 1 a.m. at the north hangar in Tustin, near Valencia Avenue and Armstrong Road, according to the Orange County Fire Authority.

The fire was so large, firefighters used a helicopter to try to put out the flames that consumed the structure standing 17 stories high. Crews also attacked from the ground. "It's sad. We're losing a piece of history," said Dwight Hanson, a Marine who was once stationed at the base in the '80s.

Hours after the fire started, officials said crews pulled back from the fight due to the "imminent danger of collapse." The OCFA said the they would let the structure safely collapse before crews moved in to extinguish any leftover embers or flames.

The hangar is one of the largest wooden structures ever built, and it is one of two air hangars built in 1942 at the former Marine Corps Air Station Tustin. The historic landmark has been featured in several shows and films, including "Pearl Harbor," "Star Trek" and "Austin Powers."

For many residents who live in the area, these hangars have been a part of the landscape for as long as they've been alive.

Meanwhile, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Things change, and often not for the best. But maybe that's just a "senior way of looking at things". So sorry to see a bit of history destroyed. I didn't realize it was an all-wood structure: and your photos were amazing.
Laughed at all the witches floating on the lake.

The phrase about long-term friendships that just pick up where they left off, is so true. And it is one of the glues that holds us together: at least for me. I feel much that way about you.
