Penguin fitted with special orthopedic shoe can waddle in style

Lucas, a penguin at the San Diego Zoo, was feeling kind of low. He had bumblefoot, a type of infection that causes inflammation and lesions and makes it hard to walk. To make matters worse, the other penguins in his enclosure didn't want to hang out with him because of his condition. (For shame!) However, wherever there is an animal in need, there are often bright humans willing to go the distance to make it better. Zookeepers had Lucas walk across sand to create an impression, and then created molds of his feet. Thera-Paw, a company that specializes in protective boots for animals, then crafted special orthopedic shoes for the little guy. They even made them as close to his natural foot color as possible so he wouldn't stand out. It worked! Lucas took to them immediately, and even more importantly, he was able to socialize again.

A repeat from one year ago, because it is kinda special?

I am often unsure what to include in tomorrow's blog. I usually think what is the best that happened today, and go with it. Tonight was no different. As I was watching the US Open, WonderWoman sent me a text

Dru is a great lady, and how sweet of her to make WW feel like a celebrity.

 Like her dog above, who obviously adores her, so do we who know Dru. I know four generations of Dru. 

I loved her mother, Bette, who was the star, Dru, UCF Professor and my boss when I taught for her. Dru's  beautiful daughter Shannon, and the adorable grand-baby girl, Livvy.  Dru is married to Larry and Shannon is married to Brandon. I would say more, but I already sound like a stalker.

Jacana

* The Jacanas are a family of wading birds that are spread across Asia, Africa, South and Central America, and Australia. There are just eight known species, and they’re easily identifiable for having extremely long, thin toes.

The comb-crested Jacana is also known as the lotus bird, lily trotter or Jesus bird, as it often seems to be walking on water.
