Gianna and Kobe Bryant

A sad day. NBA legend Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter
and seven others were killed in a helicopter crash in Southern California on Sunday. His sudden death at age 41, touching off an outpouring of grief for a star whose celebrity transcended sports.
Sincere condolences and prayers to all of the families.

Friday, the daughters took the Moms for lunch in Irvine,

at

Really good ramen, and my favorite rice.

If you are interested in ramen, this article from Stan and
BBC Travel is about the only Michelin rated ramen in Japan.
Thank you, Stan.

I went to a memorial mass today in Redlands, CA.
My second memorial in six weeks. It was lovely.
Maybe not a word you associate with a funeral.
I have heard people not go, saying they would instead,
rather remember the person as they were.
My response, if I had the nerve to say it,
would be, it's not about you.
It is about the family who survive, and to celebrate the life.
When younger I don't think I had that perspective.
I am glad that I do now. I always feel good for going.
Today we paid tribute to Rollin Leo Barry, 89.

Father of Michelle and Mary ...

and Mary's children.

In their mourning, they planned the wonderful service,
a second location reception and with terrific food.
Amazing entertainment from Katie, a stellar violinist,
and sister Ellie, stunning vocalist, and a duo performance.

Carole, Ellie, Lisa and Katie

Their Grandma Carole and Mom, Lisa joined for the photo.
A slideshow showing Rollin from a baby to recent.
You could tell he had a great life.
Finally to return to Rollin's home to relax in the home where Michelle and Mary grew up (shown above) after
such a special and meaningful day.

Puppy Update:
After the memorial activities, I did a little puppy sitting.
Zoey, now 1, had gone to doggy-daycare today.
(She loves it, and I will try to do a blog on it)
She was wiped out!

and Laker (now 8) sleeps a lot anyway.

It looked like a good idea to me too,
but I needed to start on this blog.

Wishing you a lovely Sunday
and thanks again for visiting.

Two years ago I lost a close friend, at her request.
She had decided to be more selective with her time,
and her new schedule would not include me.
I never knew what I had done.
I wanted to ask, but I chose to honor her wish.
It hurt so much, and it still does.

Now I have lost another friend,
a former student & artist, but not by her choice.
She spent the last year bravely battling stage 4 lung cancer.
I did visit, call, e-mail, send stuff, but she was the warrior.
Brandy did everything medically asked of her.
Her husband let me know Wednesday, of our loss.
He is lost.
It may be harder for men?
You see I think men are fixers. They want to fix it.
And sometimes you can't.

As a teenager I remember my Dad being deeply upset
for what seemed a long time when even a movie star passed?
Some he had driven, as his job in the studios, but
most I think he just felt like he knew from movies?
I watched this happened more often as he & they grew older.

So now as I am older, I am on this side of dealing.
I miss this dear sweet lady. but know she is now free of pain.
Women are emotional, we cry, we think & re-think.
No easy answers. Loss is hard.

Day 671: A loss and a tribute.

When I was younger, and a famous person died ...
I remember it genuinely affecting my Dad.
I knew he didn't know them personally,
but I could tell his grief was real.

Today we lost one of our heroes, Maya Angelou.
Author, poet, playwright, film director, producer,
civil rights activist, actress, dancer, professor,
mother, mentor, speaker, friend.

I read her poems and books. I watched her interviews.
I quoted her quotes. I referenced her in conversations.
I admired both her strength and gentleness.

I felt I knew her, and I liked her. A lot.

And, like my Dad, today I am affected by her passing.

Thursday's smiles from Maya Angelou ...
