Andy Goldsworthy is a fascinating British artist who does poetic and beautiful nature art. His work is fleeting, most of it lasting just mere minutes before being washed or blown away. We’ve posted about him before, and his work lingers in the mind far longer than it lasts in nature. Some of his work melts, some of it is so fragile that it probably lasts just until the camera shutter clicks. The bulk of his fleeting nature work was done in the 70’s and 80’s in his native England, although more permanent installation have been recently made in great museums like National Museum of Scotland, The DeYoung, National Gallery of Art, and many others.
Here is a painstakingly curated collection of winter images by Andy
Goldsworthy. Found to best represent his ability to shape snow,
ice, and winter leaves into ethereal works of art. This includes
mind-bending arches made of hand placed ice, perfectly spherical
snowballs placed in landscapes, and much more. The
patience required to build these temporary masterpieces is amazing.
Happy Birthday Grandhunk #3 !!
Today, October 6th is GH#3's 23rd birthday. All three Grandhunks are crazy and all have great special talents. Since GH#1 & 3 both live in Nevada, and GH#2 is flying there today, it is the first time I wont see him on his birthday. But, I will sing to him in the morning. Not a great sound but a tradition, I sing to all my relatives on their day, whether they like it or not. ;o)
23 years of wonderful memories, the time flew by. Most of the memories are funny, because he is blessed with a wonderful, crazy sense of humor. One of the favorites is from 2014. WonderWoman left the two Grandhunks 2&3 home while she made a quick trip to the store. GH#2 had had a recent birthday and was looking at his $100. bill. Then out of nowhere, he told GH#3 that he would give him the $100 bill if he would let him shave off one eyebrow. GH#3 said yes.
And a sweet one from a blog - 10/20/2019:
"Ever
have moments that made you stop & realize it was special? I did.
Last Sunday morning. Lasted almost 30 minutes. The dogs like the big
curved outdoor couch in the morning. The sun hits in two spots and they
lay in it & bake. Grandhunk #3 (19, next week) came out and sat by
me, so four of us vegged on the couch. All 6'4" of him stretched out
with his head in my lap. My legs were propped up on the adjacent table.
The dogs knew we were there, but they slept peacefully. There had been
some conversation, but it drifted away.A breeze and birds chirped
sometimes, the only sounds. A calm quiet, so perfect, I didn't want to
move. I closed my eyes, breathed in and smiled to myself. At some point
later I said, "you know this is perfect?" Zack said, "I know, right?" Perfect.

*I made a card for GH#2 to take to GH#3, I may show you later in a step by step? Or not.

What incredible beauty and whimsy in this artist's work. I do love the grandhunk stories, and hope to save some of mine, if the memory holds out. You can now be like your dad and say: "Have I told you this one before? Well here is goes again!" I loved that expression and I adore hearing these stories about family love again and again.
Happy Birthday to Grandhunk #3!
Although I have been reading your blog for some years now I never realized his birthday was 1 day before my older son's birthday. W. will be 44 tomorrow.
You won't see GH#3 on his birthday and I won't see W. either. His wife is ill, so celebrations have to wait. That's life.
What luck we can at least see them via your phones!
Have a fine weekend, Jacki.
Thanks so much, Carrol. It warms my heart to know you like the blog and stories, sometimes it feels like I am just sending them out in the wind. Kind comments are like a reward.
Thank you, Elenor. Yes, this technology does have some advantages?
Have a great week.
The sculptural work of this artist is so amazing. His work is kept forever in photographs even if eventually the piece does not exist any longer. Your piece is strong because of the ephemera you used. I like when there are 3 or 4 elements in a collage. :-)
