Rare Photos of the Beatles Before They Were Famous

The Beatles’ George Harrison, Paul McCartney, John Lennon and original drummer Pete Best play a gig at the Cavern Club in Liverpool.

The images show the band playing a local gig in Liverpool in 1961. All of the Beatles were born in Liverpool, and the city is where the band formed. Lennon and McCartney first performed there together in 1957.

The newly discovered photos feature John Lennon, 20, and Paul McCartney, 19, singing and playing guitar; George Harrison, 18, also plays guitar, while Best, 19, plays drums behind them. Drummer Ringo Starr wouldn’t join the band until 1962, a little over a year later, completing the “Fab Four.”

The photos were taken by a Liverpool-based fan.

Tracks is publishing the images to mark the 60th anniversary of “Love Me Do,” which the Beatles released in October 1962.

Former history teacher is helping hundreds of kids turn bikes into vehicles of opportunity

Despite overwhelming adversity, there is a resounding spirit of survival and hope for people living in the Bayou State.

Dustin LaFont knows hardship can be a way of life in Louisiana; one of the poorest states in the nation and the frequent site of devastating natural disasters.

The  former history teacher also knows that hardship breeds a special kind of resilience.

That's why LaFont founded Front Yard Bikes, a nonprofit that serves hundreds of students in Baton Rouge.

At Front Yard Bikes, students work to build their own bicycle, learning skills like mechanics, welding and cycling safety, while receiving mentoring, academic support, and job training opportunities.

The project started in 2010 when LaFont was inspired by the neighborhood kids who gathered in his yard for tips, tools, and bike parts.

Students involved with Front Yard Bikes even helped renovate a community park near the non-profit's headquarters which now serves as a safe place for kids to learn, play and ride.

Hello Jacki, today I'm enjoying your blog again.
Yesterday we celebrated my older son's birthday, together with my younger and girlfriend. They stayed here over night, so I was happy to have them here for some more hours.
I hope you too had a good weekend, Jacki!

There are so many things from the “old” days I wish we still had around like honesty and truth. Power seems to have taken over. This old man in your piece is amazing. The years that he has seen!
