Historical Collection of Found Paper Airplanes
From the New Yorker Magazine, I read about Harry E. Smith, painter, filmmaker and collector.
His paper airplane collection became thing of legend over the years, particularly because of his passion and interest in tracking down new ones. Jumping out into moving traffic, grabbing an airplane before it dived into a gutter, Smith put pride into his saving of these throwaway relics.
Collected between 1961 and 1983, a box of 250 planes was donated to the Smithsonian after his death, just a fraction of his total collection, but a fascinating time capsule nonetheless.
The age, patina & variations in the photos, show-cases all kinds of hastily or elaborately folded planes.
You can imagine the owner launching one out of a fifteenth story
apartment, watching it silently sail down to the busy streets below.
Below you’ll find a sampling of the collection.
For movie lovers, there’s an Australian film about competitive paper airplane flying here.
a map that Smith made to mark where each of his airplanes was found.
Interesting?
This was years ago, maybe a decade? When I look at this, I can still feel Laker's weight on me, but happy for it. He was such a sweet dog, GH#3, Zack, was playing and I was watching his video games.
Lately I have seen so many people and friends on FB facing the loss of a pet, and it tugs on my heart and mind, I go back to the always huge losses during my 82 years. Dogs love you more than they love themselves, it's true.

Thank you for sharing 😁
Loved the beautiful family photo. My little dog is still young and he likes to lie on my lap upside down. His head goes off the chair and his front paws are up like a rabbit and his hind legs are relaxed and wide open. We call this pose: "liquid dog". And yes, a imagine you can still feel that absolute trust and love from him.
Have a great rest of the week.
Where is Jacki, is my first question and it doesn't take a long time to find you next to Demura Sensei.
I especially liked today's last smile. Thank you, Jacki.
Thank you Anonymous or Paula??
Thanks so much Carrol, I melted a little bit when I found that photo. Your little Bentley would be a lot less weight that Laker, but just as good feeling, I'm sure.Have a great few weekdays and a great weekend, Carrol.
Thanks Elenor, yes I agree, the last smile probably needs to be heard bu so many?
Love the Ukrainian flag juxtaposition over the amazing background…. :-)
Thanks, John. I'd love to stop the focus on the war, but they don't, so I guess I can't?
