Senko Hanabi

Summer fireworks are actually a tradition in Japan too, one that originated over 280 years ago as a means of warding off epidemics! Fireworks in Japan are not complete without senko hanabi, subtle and ephemeral sparklers that have been transformed into accessories.

The senko hanabi earrings are handmade by asobi x otome, an accessory maker that specializes in creating playful acrylic accessories. The earrings are currently available in two styles, matsuba and botan, as well as a kanzashi, which is a traditional headpiece worn with yukata or kimono.

The pieces range between 2,500 – 4,500 yen and are made-to-order. Unfortunately, they’re only available in Japan but you can also enjoy their work vicariously through Twitter or Instagram.

Sumo starts next Sunday (7/9), and I can hardly wait!

How sweet is she? :-)

Thanks, John. She is one of my Aunt Vonda's students in Indiana in the 60's. She saved a school picture of all the kids she taught, so I have a lot of sweet faces.
