Illustrator Perfectly Captures the Overlooked Joys of Living Alone

Known for her beautiful background paintings, Los Angeles-based artist Yaoyao Ma Van As boasts an impressive professional portfolio. In addition to her collection of commissioned work, the painter, illustrator, and “occasional animator” also creates charming personal pieces that explore the overlooked benefits of living alone.

Each playfully drawn depiction features a female figure (undeniably rendered in Ma Van As' own likeness) demonstrating the perks of single life. Predominantly set inside her colorful, cozy house, the series presents the ins-and-outs of the character's everyday life, which range from comical to heartwarming.

Whether she's hovering in front of the fridge searching for a snack, unashamedly making a mess, or quietly sipping coffee, the solitary subject appears happy. And, with her adorable little dog by her side, she proves that living alone doesn't necessarily mean one is lonely.

Ma Van As' delightful illustrations are rendered in the artist's distinctive style and characteristically colorful palette.

If you love this aesthetic, you can see prints of most of her pieces through her online shop

Enjoy.

Here's the artist herself:

* I usually edit, using only a few of the artists works to save space, but here I used almost all of her available work, I thought it to be so charming.

Thank you for sharing that art, it all speaks to me (especially the ones with the dog)!

Thanks Sam, I am so glad you liked the artwork, it speaks to me too. That's pretty much my life too, except no cute dog and add in karate workouts 2xa week, so pretty nice for 80. ;o)

What a cute little boy Dean is. I imagine it was quite exciting for him to participate in the Mini 4-H for the first time.
Excellent collage, Jacki. You show perfectly what intruders cause. Damage, demolition and so much pain.

Hi Jacki,

Lovely, unique style. I loved the quality of light this artist got into her work. Thank you for posting so much of it. Even those of us who have been married for a very long time relish those quiet moments along. (Maybe even more than singles do!)

I am preparing 4 meals for some friends who will stay overnight on Saturday into Sunday. This is a girl who is like a sister to me and her husband and mine get along. SO it's always a nice weekend. But this was a needed break from all the chopping, etc.

Thank you.

Thank you, Elenor. Yes isn't Dean adorable? I love the photo of he and his Dad. His Dad's name is Austin Dean, thus little Dean! More 4-H tomorrow.

Thanks, Carrol! Yes, I did include so many of her works, I tried to edit, but they were all so good. I identify with those feeling minus the dog and adding my karate workouts 2x a week. Have a wonderful weekend, you and Stan deserve the very best!

Your piece reminds of the Ukrainian war map. It appears as an attempt to surround Ukrainian territory but unsuccessfully totally. I just love to see what you will come up with next. :-)

Thanks so much, John. That helps me go on, I miss doing lighter work. I love it when you like it.
