Ohigan

In Japan around this time of year, red spider lilies are in bloom. In Japanese they're called higan-bana (彼岸花) and are named after the Buddhist holiday of Higan, which occurs around the autumnal equinox.

Higan literally means "crossing over to the other shore" and is a time to reflect on the truth of impermanence, expressed as summer turning to fall. Explore this and symbols of Autumn in our special collection:

“Pillow Fight,” Disaster Soft Landing

If two MTA cars collided, the result would be catastrophic. But that’s not so in the latest animation from Argentinian director Fernando Livschitz.

Like his previous films that twist the mundane into the bizarre, “Pillow Fight” reimagines ordinary fixtures of the urban landscape as billowing cushions. Yellow taxis, an elevated walkway, and even buildings get an uncanny, padded upgrade as they crash into one another to harmless effect.

Livschitz helms Black Sheep Studio, and you can watch more of his films on Vimeo.

What beautiful pieces in your blog today, Jacki. And, of course I always profit from your little gems of wisdom: many of which end up in my journals. Thank you.

Japanese people have an extraordinary sense of beauty. The red spider lilies you show and all other things are so beautiful.
Tomorrow is a happy day for me, I'll see my family to celebrate my older son's 45th birthday.
Wishing you also a happy weekend, Jacki.
