I once read that the most hurtful act is to ignore.  It was said better, but that is the gist. So the kindest act might be paying attention?

I had a sorority pledge sister, Penny, who had an innate ability to really listen and pay attention to whoever she was with. I remember the effect being that she really made the person feel important because she was so intently present to the person.
