100 Life-Sized Elephants Lumber Along Newport Cliff for GlobalConservation

A herd of elephants has arrived in Newport, Rhode Island, on the first leg of their 3,500-mile journey across the U.S. Jointly organized by Elephant Family USA and Art&Newport, the monumental public work draws attention to the relationships between people and wildlife,  as the human population grows and encroaches on natural habitats.

The Great Elephant Migration” features 100 life-sized animal sculptures crafted by the CoExistence Collective, an organization of 200 Indigenous artisans from the Bettakurumba, Paniya, Kattunayakan, and Soliga communities. Standing up to 15 feet tall and weighing nearly 800 pounds, each is made with the invasive Lantana camara weed, which has disrupted the native biodiversity of about 40 percent of India’s protected areas.

Many of the artisans live alongside the creatures in India’s Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, and their work is both an homage to the magnificent animals and a call to action to protect their environments.

Biotech entrepreneur donates $50 million to UC Irvine School of Biological Sciences

Irvine, Calif., June 15, 2024 — The University of California, Irvine has received a $50 million donation from Orange County biotech entrepreneur Charlie Dunlop for the School of Biological Sciences. Dean Frank LaFerla announced the gift before thousands of graduating students, faculty and family supporters at today’s school commencement, where Dunlop was the featured speaker.

His gift will create an endowed fund that will provide unrestricted support for academic and research activities within the school.

“This gift supports UC Irvine’s belief that human and environmental health are integrated and that well-being requires an evidence-based approach that engages all disciplines in the School of Biological Sciences,” said Chancellor Howard Gillman. “Charlie Dunlop’s dedication to this vision and his deep generosity will help UC Irvine set a standard that other biology programs in the U.S. can follow.”

So proud of my cousins in Indiana ...

4-H membership has been a long time tradition in our family. I am so happy that they have had ten years of a wide varitey of experiences and mentorship in so many offered activities from raising and showing animals, all stages of biology, cooking, sewing, dressmaking, photography and so many more.

Jacki, I always admire your digital skills for your collages. Seeing your "Destruction" I can imagine perfectly what destruction might be like. Very well done.
Jacki, again I saved some of your smiles to send them to friends. I hope that's ok?

Hi Jacki,

As you can see, I am behind in enjoying your daily feasts. Loved this one. The elephants are powerful, your cousins are inspiring and the video on improvisation is a keeper. I plan to try it: hey that may be an oxymoron!
