Expressive ‘Ohlala’ Characters

by Reen Barrera

Sporting colorful garments and richly patterned faces, Reen Barrera’s doll sculptures evoke an expressive, make-believe world. Often dressed in striped tops and hand-stitched hoods with animalistic ears, his imaginative Ohlala characters represent the universality of human emotions while emphasizing every individual’s unique qualities.

Barrera creates the sculptures from wood and patchwork textiles, and he also makes paintings depicting Ohlala figures in pensive moments or expressing a sense of empowerment. Find his work at Art Central Hong Kong in March, and see more on his website and Instagram

Competitors, Referees & families are here

Good morning Jacki, Wow! you have really had your plate full: lots of great things, but also some sucky things. Hope that leak gets fixed soon. I am still amazed at how you find all the these interesting stories and photos of creative people and things. (It really helps your readers, like me, in a world so full of worry.) Have a great week ahead. I have been on overload and have a fun but busy week ahead, so today I am a sloth. Thank you, thank you for setting the day with a positive note.

These dolls are really funny. But I even more like your collage. It's extraordinary and a perfect interpretation of the title.
Wishing you good week ahead with all problems fixed.

Thank you Carrol, I always love hearing from you. Yes sloth days are good for the weary soul, and after we have been too busy, of our own making. I am so glad you feel the blog is a positive, Lord knows we have more than enough negatives. Take care, Carrol and please hug Stan and Bentley for me?

Thank you, Elenor, you are always so kind to comment, and I am so lucky to have you in my life. We have never met, but even across the globe, I feel we are good friends! Thank you, Elenor.
