Five Decades of ‘Extreme Beachcombing’

For nearly five decades, John Anderson has pursued an enthusiasm—one might even call it an obsession—with things that wash up along the Pacific Northwest coastline.

Describing his occupation as “extreme beachcombing,” the pastime transformed into a full-time passion when he retired from his plumbing job and transformed his shop in Forks, Washington, into John’s Beachcombing Museum.

An An enchanting mini documentary by Ryan Pinkard and Christian Klintholm follows the intrepid forager on beach treks and through his archive of treasures. “Extreme Beachcombing” is narrated entirely by Anderson, who takes us on a tour of his floor-to-ceiling hoard of curiosities. This mini-doc is showing below as today's video.

If you’re passing through Forks, John’s Beachcombing Museum is open most days from June through August. You can explore a plethora of human-made objects that float in from all over the world, from quotidian plastic toys and dock boots to nuclear submarine locator beacons and a WWII life raft radio.

The Incredible Story of Bonnie, the Runaway Calf
Bonnie was just four months old when her world turned upside down. The farmer who had raised her passed away, and his family decided to sell the entire herd for slaughter.
As Bonnie watched her family being forced onto a truck, their panicked cries filled the air. In that terrifying moment, she made a choice—she ran.
Bonnie bolted into the woods, disappearing into the thick trees. Everyone thought she wouldn’t last a week. A farm calf had no chance in the wild, right?
Trail cameras soon captured an incredible sight—Bonnie wasn’t alone. She had found an unexpected family: a herd of wild deer. They accepted her, moved with her, and even protected her. With no cows around, the deer became her new herd, teaching her how to survive.
For eight months, Bonnie lived as a wild animal—foraging, hiding from danger, and running with the deer.
Not far from the woods, a woman named Becky Bartels had heard about the brave little calf. Fearing Bonnie wouldn’t survive the harsh winter, she started leaving food and fresh bedding for her every day.
But Becky knew Bonnie needed a real home—somewhere safe, where she wouldn’t have to struggle for food or fear hunters. She reached out to Farm Sanctuary, an organization that rescues animals like Bonnie.
Rescuing Bonnie wasn’t easy. She had become a master at hiding, and her trust in humans was fragile. But after multiple attempts, rescuers finally brought Bonnie to safety.
From a destined-for-slaughter calf to a free spirit of the woods, Bonnie’s story is nothing short of legendary.
Similarly case like this was seen in Poland (2021), a young cow escaped from a farm and was later found living with a herd of wild bison.

Focusing on Journals

I think I have 142 journals, not sure since they are not in one location. For many years I journaled daily. When I retired from teaching and advertising, I jumped into blogging, with help from Marilyn Gallas who helped me with formats etc. So my blog is now my journal, and like life, you never know what you will see. I have been asked to do a journaling demo at Seal Beach Leisure World in two weeks, so I am looking through, to take different journals to share. My goal will be to get them excited about journaling. It is proven that journaling helps us mentally and physically, and there are no rules.
