A quick step-by-step ...
Working in the incomplete journal page on right.
I started with a 4x4" square, and no plans.
I added piece 2 of torn junk mail, using glue-stick & a brayer.
Piece #3 is also torn junk mail, left-center.
Piece #4 is torn junk mail, upper-right.

I tried a fifth black piece, which I kinda liked, but went with four.

A China marker is really fun to play with, kinda like an adult crayon? Originally used to mark prices on cans in grocery stores, before they had hand machines to do it.

I covered the red background with white gesso, then scribbled in it while it was wet. A few highlights in gesso.
