Colorful Metal Coils into Animal Sculptures

by Artist Lee Sangsoo

He practices a form of “drawing in the air,” and artist Lee Sangsoo forges colorful, spiraled flamingos, dogs, parrots, and other creatures with long strips of metal. He sculpts the minimal works with resin or stainless steel depending on the size—he uses the latter for any piece that spans more than one meter—and coats each angled side with subtle gradients or a complementary palette. Although three-dimensional and sometimes so large that they tower over the landscape, the creatures are inspired by Picasso’s small, abstract animal drawings, which the artist explains: Lines, planes, and colors are important elements that work in my work. The lines drawn in the two-dimensional sketchbook determine the large flow and form of the work, and it becomes three-dimensional in the three-dimensional space. The square lines are shown in various shapes and colors according to the flow and twist, and you can feel the dynamism in the still work. Also, depending on the flow, the thickness of the lines may be rhythmically thickened or thinned.

Some of Lee’s works are on view as part of KIAF Seoul, and you can find more of the twisted menagerie on his Instagram.

When WonderWoman was here last week, we went through some of my things. We found my small gold ring with nine very tiny sapphires. I had bought it in Hong Kong in 1990 when there with my Dad.

I bought it in a jewelry warehouse where they made it, so it wasn't very expensive but a sweet memory.

I had stopped wearing it, but now it fits on my pinky finger, loosely. I was pleased that it fit and wore it until I looked down and it wasn't there anymore. Scolding myself for being careless, I wasn't going to tell WW. I was home all weekend recovering, so I knew it had to  be here somewhere? Chances of finding it were slim and none! I have been giving Saint Anthony a lot of business lately, as I seem to be misplacing things a lot.

I told him I might need him to be on retainer? I am lucky that I have help cleaning my tiny home once a month. Today Dulce had Johanna helping her. Johanna vacuumed my studio and we heard a noise but it was too loud to be a tiny ring, but it did remind me and I asked their help in looking out for it. Later Johanna heard a ping and we both froze. She reached in and pulled out my ring.

What are the chances??

Jacki, I have no idea how you manage to create such interesting and entertaining blogs each day. Of course you have a lot of practice - 4427 days, which doesn't make it less effort - but I think it is the love with which you create them. Thank you!
