I have a lot of heroes.
Today I had lunch with Marlene Gerloff, a true hero.
We sat in a tiny Chinese restaurant and talked.
(actual fortune at today's lunch) |
What a treat to see what age almost 83 can be.
Smart, warm, funny and oh so talented!
Garden Path |
An acclaimed watercolor artist with International shows,
With a former career in advertising, now at 82 years old,
Quiet Stream |
We met through Karate.
Marlene's husband Milt is one of Demura Sensei's black belts
Marlene was guest demonstrator at HB Art League once,
when electricity and everything else was not working ...
and she gave the best watercolor demo I had ever seen.
Originally from Boston, with a BFA from Massachusetts
College of Art. Marlene had a very successful career as graphic
designer and advertising art director.
When Marlene retired, her design, drawing and composition
skills were brought to her love of watercolor.
She has taught at Orange County Art Museum in Newport,
and is widely sought after as an art judge and demonstrator.
Active in art organizations, Mission Viejo Cultural Council,
chairperson for the Cultural Arts Commission,
this award winning artist, teacher and early member of
Saddleback Art League, was recruited in 2004 ...
by the City of Mission Viejo to design a ...
500 foot mosaic wall depicting the history of the area.
Marlene drew the entire wall by hand, then volunteers
and family members completed the mosaics as an
artistic tribute to be enjoyed by all, daily.

(apologies for some glare in this photo due to my poor photography) |

Another stunning outdoor feature, a steel butterfly.
Painted by Marlene with rainbow colors on
one side and butterflies of the world on the other.
She can do it all.
Marlene's studio and view |
Marlene and husband Milt live high above Mission Viejo,
surrounded by trees, quiet and a view of Lake Mission Viejo.
Another great day here in SoCal, but with a hero!
