2GN2S:

a Spiraling, Light-Filled ‘Hive’ Designed by Kengo Kuma

all photos by Martin Mischkulnig

For his first assignment in Australia, Japanese architect Kengo Kuma has designed The Exchange, a multipurpose structure located at Darling Square in Sydney, and housing a library, food hall, restaurants, and a day-care facility.  In contrast to the high-rise buildings in the surrounding area, the exchange is a spiraling, light-filled ‘hive’ designed to be a soft and warm low-rise structure integrated with the square.

The distinguished and elaborate facade is made from bent
Accoya wooden threads that are wrapped around the building
in an irregular pattern to form a hive shape.

The spiraling facade extends into the square,
morphing into a pergola that provides shade.

“This structure resulted in interior space that resembles a silkworm cocoon, and a primitive façade which looks like a bird’s nest,” said the architects, “creating an oasis in the middle of an urban jungle.”

I caught myself smiling at the tv ...
amidst a whole bunch of memories.
It's that time of year when I hunker down and watch ...

the 144th Kentucky Derby.

More than 50 years, but I was stirred by so many memories.
Thinking ... yes some horses love the rain, others tolerate.
I watched the jockeys and remembered their athleticism.
A soft spot for the stable hands & their care for the horses.
I remembered rubbing the horse's muscular neck.
Their whole body like a high performance engine, ready.
Feeling the soft nuzzle with hairs that tickled.
Their eyes that could be relaxed or on alert.
There's a special tie between a young girl and a horse. Fact.

I was 11, when my Mom pulled me out of school
and we flew to Sydney, Australia where she married Des.
My step-Dad was world a world renowned race horse trainer.
So from boarding school to having my own horse, dog,
cat, magpie and even a cockatoo, was quite a change.

Des had a large stable and training facility in Melbourne.
Even though he had stable boys I learned to work too.
I learned to switch from riding Western to English,
and sometimes got to help with morning workouts.
When not in school, I'd go along with Des to races.
He would give me $20 to bet and sometimes gave hints.
I would put away $10 and only bet $10, so no matter what
I came home with $10 more than I went with, but often, more.
I lived there for four year, a huge part of my life. TMI?

Wishing you a lovely weekend.

About 100 years ago I lived in Australia for four years.

A wonderful country with great friendly people.
I was there age 11 - 14 with so many memories.

Kilbreda College, 1953

Every year at this time, I think about Boxing Day.
the day after Christmas, a major holiday there.

Six days ...
Superman & WonderWoman took off for Gotham!

While in NYC they are staying with super hero friends ...

and loving the city!

Who wouldn't love NYC?

And it worked out, that they could drive to Concordia College

Ethan scored the goal

for a collegiate soccer game & to watch Australian cousin
Ethan Maguire, play his second game.

Ethan is a freshman business major at Goldey-Beacom College.
On a full ride scholarship at the Wilmington, Delaware Collage.

Meanwhile, across the globe in Sydney, his family  ...
Mom - Pauline, Dad - Gav & brother James streamed the game.

Superman, Soccer star cousin, Ethan & WonderWoman

So proud of this cousin!

Meanwhile, I taught Thursday,
then came to the "bat-cave" for Grandma fun.

All 3 grandhunks (16 - 19) drive, have school, jobs, homework
& friends, so Laker and I kinda watch them streak by.
Saturday morning I offered breakfast at Kimmie's.

Grandhunk #2 didn't want to wait, so he made his own
bacon & eggs, he was on to dessert by the time I got this pic.
Determined to get his homework done before leaving for work.

GH#1 & GH#3 and I went to Kimmie's ...
& as GH#2 had predicted, we had a wait. A long wait!
And, next time you wait somewhere,
look around, this is what you will see.

About now GH#1 reminded me I too was on my i-phone!
He's right again! I do it too.
But, I am also taking these very necessary close-ups ...

cool ones, that you might miss?

Wishing you a lovely weekend.
Thanks so much for visiting.
