It’s wild how one quiet, sleepy animal can change an entire town’s night. In Scarborough, England, people were ready for the usual New Year’s Eve fireworks. Loud bangs. Bright skies. That big “we made it” feeling. But then a walrus showed up.
He hauled himself out near the harbour and settled in like he belonged there. Rescuers and locals started calling him Thor. And the more people watched him, the more it hit them: he wasn’t here for a show. He was here to rest. Experts warned that fireworks could stress him out. So the town made a choice that still feels kind of unreal in the best way. They cancelled the fireworks. No big argument. No “but we already planned it.” Just a simple decision: let him sleep.
It wasn’t only about one night, either. Thor was thought to be taking a break on a long journey north. Later, reports said he’d made it all the way to Iceland. Think about that for a second. A tired traveller stops by. A crowd gathers. And instead of pushing closer and louder, a town quiets down and gives him peace.
I don’t know. It makes me feel something. Maybe we don’t always need the noise to mark a moment. Maybe sometimes the best way to celebrate a new year is to protect a living thing that’s just trying to make it home.

That community showed such compassion for Thor was such a beautiful act of kindness. Imagine how our world could be if our leaders really cared about its people. Maybe with medicare for all for starters!
