Some of you know, I love Sumo. Today I found out that former Ozeki, Takakeisho (who I have followed through many years as he competed & retired last year) will become 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐚𝐰𝐚 O𝐲𝐚𝐤𝐚𝐭𝐚 and take over 𝐓𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐦𝐚 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞, renaming it 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐚𝐰𝐚.

The Japan Sumo Association held a regular board meeting today, the 27th, at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, and approved stablemaster Minatogawa (former Ozeki Takakeisho) taking over Tokiwayama Stable and renaming it Minatogawa Stable on January 26, 2026.
Stablemaster Tokiwayama (former Komusubi Takamisugi) is approaching his mandatory retirement as a stablemaster, as he will celebrate his 65th birthday on March 1 next year. The Tokiwayama stable will participate in its final tournament, the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament, next January. As of January 26, stablemaster Tokiwayama will become a supporting stablemaster at Minatogawa Stable.

Takakeisho prior to retirement

His dream was to become a Yokozuna ever since he was a kid and he always gave 120% in every match in thanks to his fans and supporters. He said, "despite being a short and small stature rikishi, he knew he never wanted others to beat him in fighting spirit."

He relied mainly on his size and power in thrusting his opponent out of bounds. Most batches ended with him severely out of breath, and left me worried for his health. After retiring he concentrated on regaining a healthy weight. The results are miraculous, and he has a new life.

In the future, he wants to raise rikishis with the same fighting spirit and samurai like mentality. He also thanked both of his former oyakatas, ex Takanohana and his current Oyakata. His voice cracked and his eyes were little teary but he tried to stay composed like the way he did in every bout. What a rikishi, what an Ozeki he had been for all those years.

Mintogawa Oyakata, the former Takakeisho

Wow!

Jacki, I learn so much reading your daily blog. Before that time I didn't know anything about Sumo. It's as if it doesn't exist here. Your information was very interesting. Thanks.
I guess you found the last smile just for me. I love it.
Happy weekend, enjoy your time with your lovely family - and the new puppy!

Thank you, Elenor. Yes, there is a lot of tradition to Sumo, and I admire the beautiful concepts and manners. I know not many are so interested so I try to hold back my excitement. I know little, but am always anxious to learn more. Have a wonderful weekend.
