Tournament Tradition

I was invited to attend and help judge at Shito-Ryu Karate-Do Genbu-Kai Costa Mesa Dojo's 42nd Annual Jr. Kata Tournament on Tuesday evening, and I accepted. Sensei Roy Center and Sensei Brian Hilliard's Jr. students competed in kata and kobudo. It was especially heart warming from to see some of my former students still actively participating and helping. I may receive more photos later on and add, but for now it will be these five.

Sister and brother, Audrey and Nicolas Chen did a beautiful demonstration. Audrey was in her Mom's tummy as I taught Nicolas when he was younger. They are two of my favorite people.

Jianna Florek, San-dan

Jianna started Karate at Costa Mesa dojo at age 6 and is approaching her 20th year!

Training throughout high school, college and now while working as a forensic psychologist for Irvine Police Department.

A lovely evening with special thanks to Sensei Roy Center, Sensei Brian Hilliard, Blackbelts, Kim Israelson, Jianna Florek, John Perez, Mike Croft, Dennis Tow & Melinda Shoot. Brown Belts, Nicolas Chen, Audrey Chen, Julia Palmer Criss, Jon Criss and to all the brave competitors and supportive parents & families.

Born on this day in 1904, Isamu Noguchi was one of the 20th century’s most important and critically acclaimed sculptors. Over the course of an eclectic career from the 1920s until his death in 1988, he created sculptures, gardens, furniture and lighting designs, ceramics, playgrounds, architecture, landscapes, and set designs, crafting a creative practice rooted in art as a physical experience.

To have such successful students is always a reason to be proud of them. Jacki, it also shows that you were a wonderful teacher and contributed to their career and their life.
