The Gentle Giant

What a great face? What a great smile? I met this tall guy (6'4") when he came to our old Hombu dojo in 1992, to take his first Karate class.

Mitchell and I were teaching that day, and we had already decided to do 25 repetitions of the kata, Basai Dai to honor Demura Sensei's years in the U.S. Since it is an advanced kata, we considered changing plans, but I decided to talk to Kevin. I explained what we had planned, and asked if he would be willing to follow along? I mentioned that when I was beginning, I got a chance to work out with advanced belts and it was a special memory. Kevin liked the idea, and I said with so many repetitions, he might be the first to learn the kata on his first day.

Kevin and John

He has been a black belt for decades now, and his lovely wife, Natra is also a blackbelt. I often think back about Kevin's first day, and that he is still training. Makes me smile.

David Hockney, 87

David Hockney conquers Paris with a historic retrospective! From April 9 to August 31, 2025, the Louis Vuitton Foundation presents an extraordinary exhibit dedicated to #davidhockney, one of the most influential artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Over 400 works spanning seven decades, from iconic paintings to digital creations on iPad and iPhone.

It doesn't take long to make David Hockney laugh. At

nearly 88 years old, he is frail but still very dapper in

his beige, red and black houndstooth suit with a white

silk handkerchief poking out of the pocket, and

trademark round yellow glasses perched on his nose.

Very nice blog. Wish I could see Davoid's show in France! He still looks like he can cause a bit of trouble: what a great face! Loved the child singing: Don't worry. Have a great weekend, Jacki
