Misprints & Unwanted Paper into Notebooks
Although recycling paper uses less water than manufacturing the material from wood pulp, the process still requires significant energy and resources. The team behind Resketch has found a way to skip that step altogether.
Founded by Chicago-based artist Shawn Smith and now helmed by Skaaren Design, the company makes notebooks and sketchpads of unused architectural diagrams, maps, logs, sheet music, and more. The resulting designs offer users the opportunity to creatively engage with the original markings and add their own additions to the printed pages. Flipping through a notebook also becomes an act of discovery as old calendars or bureaucratic forms are tucked between graphs and lines.
“Through partnerships with the creative community and local and national businesses, we rescue 8 to 10 tons of high-quality, unused paper every year that would otherwise prematurely enter the waste stream,” Resketch says. The company currently collaborates with schools, businesses, architectural firms, and creatives across the U.S. to source materials with just enough blank space for a doodle or to-do list.

Cyclo Knitter: Bicycle-Based Machine That Knits a Scarf in Five Minutes
The Cyclo Knitter is a bicycle-based machine by design student George Barratt-Jones. The contraption is made from a simple combination of wood and bike parts and allows one to knit a scarf through light exercise. Barratt-Jones came up with the idea one day while waiting for the train in Eindhoven. His invention allows other riders to stay warm while passing time on the platform, and step away with a winter accessory. 1+ minute video, here.
If you like this creative knitting mechanism, check out the Rocking Knit, a rocking chair designed by Damien Ludi and Colin Peillex that converts rocking into knitted hats.

Jacki, i like the idea to recycle these papers. Many artist do this already, but Now you can simply buy such notebooks, that's great..
You drawing at the beginning is excellent, Jacki!
I have a wonderful gift from you that was recycled papers. You were making them at one time, although you pointed out that the project was very time -consuming. I filled mine with drawings, etc that i thought went with the specific pages. It is still one of my favorite sketchbooks. Thank you, Jacki.
Thanks Elenor, I am glad you liked the process. We get so many great variations when painting our own papers, and especially if we paint on paper that already has something interesting on it? Please take good care.
Yes, I remember that sketchbook, it was wonderful! I think too many of us don't give ourselves time to do silly things, which would help in a lot of ways?
