2GN2S:

3700 Candles Create a Tanabata

“Milky Way” in Front of Tokyo Tower

This weekend is Tanabata,
meaning “Evening of the seventh”), a Japanese festival
celebrating the meeting of the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi.
According to legend, the Milky Way
separates these lovers, and they are allowed to meet only
once a year on the seventh day of the seventh month.
To celebrate, 3700 candles have been placed in front of Tokyo’s
Zojoji Temple, curving their way to Tokyo Tower
and creating an illusion of twinkling stars reaching up to the sky.

The installation, known as Washi Candle Night
is on display for two nights only: July 6 -7.
The candles are wrapped in traditional washi paper and
are lit between 6PM – 9PM, weather permitting.

Washi Candle Night is being staged by the Nippon Daisuki Project
an initiative led by Sadayuki Murayama, a professor
of information management at Tama University.
The group seeks to promote an understanding of Japan
and  Japanese culture with public installations and exhibitions.

Home from the house on the hill till next Thursday.
Unpacked, put in a load of laundry (& dog hair).
Yes, there was a nap involved.

I had drawn a figure on black with a white pen.

step 1

I wasn't satisfied with how he turned out, so I decided to play.

step 2 & 3

I added sewing pattern & tissue for the top & pants.

step 4

The head needed help, so I use a watercolor scrap for a hat.

step 5

Finally, wonky orange sunglasses?
I know they're off, my poor arthritic hands can't work small.
It took longer to do than it looks like.

A smile for Sunday ...

OK, this is just absolutely fantastic! Anyone would be so lucky to receive this postcard in the mail. You have made simple look complex. Great show! :-)

You're the only other person I know who loves Eric Satie! Me too. Love your simple, slouching "guy on a postcard". And what you did with him was perfect :)
