When I was younger, and a famous person died ...
I remember it genuinely affecting my Dad.
I knew he didn't know them personally,
but I could tell his grief was real.
Today we lost one of our heroes, Maya Angelou.
Author, poet, playwright, film director, producer,
civil rights activist, actress, dancer, professor,
mother, mentor, speaker, friend.
I read her poems and books. I watched her interviews.
I quoted her quotes. I referenced her in conversations.
I admired both her strength and gentleness.
I felt I knew her, and I liked her. A lot.
And, like my Dad, today I am affected by her passing.
Thursday's smiles from Maya Angelou ...
