2GN2S:

"The Young Hawk Learns to Fly"

This the time of year when the baby hawks that hatched
in May are now learning to leave the nest and go out into
the world on their own. Common to Japan is the northern
goshawk (ootaka) which, can be spotted almost anywhere.

Takamasa Ogawa, painter of hawks

Hawks are the lions of the bird kingdom.
Graceful, fast, smart and strong they appear throughout
Japanese culture in many forms including falconry
(training hawks to catch prey and bring it back),
as well as idioms: a capable hawk hides the claws
A person doesn't brag or brandish the ability lightly.
For these reasons, the hawk was often the subject
of artwork. Painter Takamasa Ogawa (1716-1736)
of the Kano School of art dedicated his short life to
capturing the gracefulness of these great birds.
